In 1966, men seldom swam past age 22, the normal end date for NCAA swimming athletes. I don’t know if he was trying a comeback or just keeping in shape on the front end of his Masters career, but Larson was in the Los Angeles Invitational that year at age 26. I had the honor of swimming next to him in the consolation final of the 200(100?) Fly that year. I had some knowledge of his career and knew he was not at his peak form, but I remember it as special. I also remember him as being kind and gracious with a young teenager hoping to be on the way up. He was 12 years my senior, yet 57+ years later I still have a pleasant memory of our encounter. RIP, Lance.
