The demands on the heart and lungs are completely different.

Swimmers can run all day. But runners cant swim all day. Swimmers are in better shape than runners, no question about it.

Track is a much older sport. So many of the early interval training ideas and sets were adopted from track coaches. In fact, it was fairly common for track coaches to also coach swimming.

Regarding your joint comparison: How many series swimmers do we know that, as adults, have had shoulder surgery? And wouldn’t your weight have something to do with that comparison?
As for calories burned. You can’t compare 30 minutes of running at a specific pace with 30 minutes of swimming and no pace. And I’m sure you know there have also been studies showing that weight bearing exercise burns more calories than non-weight bearing exercise.
As a swimmer (who by the way, has had four shoulder surgeries) you also cannot dismiss the vastly different types of euphoria when comparing swimming with running.
And while there has never been an actual study, anecdotal evidence suggests that running is better for your hair 😉

The structured breathing of swimming let’s me concentrate after a the first minutes I swim in a relaxed stable, even state. When running the small fluctuations of breathing rate upset my concentration and I start considering showing down if not a pause.

I would like to add that one of the benefits of physical fitness success is NON-MATIERALISM and A LONG LIFE!! I used to wear two sweatshirts: ME: 1962-21? and MOXIE MUSIC WATER. I got a lot of interesting stares from the drivers and pedestrians in front of me while I was running. My two favourite songs to listen to while running (either in training or competitively: AFRICA (TOTO) and DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE? (HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS)!!!
