Paris Olympics, Day 3 Prelims Heat Sheet: Summer McIntosh Favored in 400 IM
The second day of swimming heats at the Paris Olympics begins Monday at 11 a.m. CEST (5 a.m. ET in the United States) with the women’s 400 IM, women’s 100 backstroke and men’s 800 freestyle.
Two heats of the women’s 400 IM begin the morning’s action, with world-record holder Summer McIntosh racing in between Jenna Forrester and Anastasia Gorbenko. American Katie Grimes, as the second overall seed, holds down lane four in the previous heat.
After that, new 100 back world-record holder Regan Smith swims next to two-time world champion Kylie Masse in the final heat of the event, one heat after defending champion (and Smith’s major rival) Kaylee McKeown. Katharine Berkoff, the only other woman in history to break 58, swims in the first seeded heat.
Finally, four heats of the 800 free include defending gold medalist Bobby Finke against longtime rivals Gregorio Paltrinieri and Mykhailo Romanchuk, who joined him on the podium three years ago, in heat three. Sam Short and Dan Wiffen have the middle lanes in heat four, surrounded by Elijah Winnington and Florian Wellbrock.
